| Drs. John Diamond and Willie May showed their work with Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ) back in the 1970's to Dr. George Goodheart, founder of Applied Kinesiology (AK). Thus began the ongoing AK work with TMJ and the hyoid bone. This expanded the relationship between Applied Kinesiology and Dentistry which continues today.
For patients who have not responded to regular treatment or therapy, the practitioner trained through the International College of Applied Kinesiology might be able to make great improvement in patients who are fitted with a special dental appliance called SOMA and can use diagnostic muscle testing to monitor them.
Many doctors, chiropractors and osteopaths have found the SOMA to be the missing link in an attempt to alleviate many physical, neurological and mental problems. Ideally these practitioners should work hand in hand with their dentists for the optimum well-being of their patients.
The SOMA Dental Appliance |
Drs. John Diamond and Joseph Da Cruz have worked together for many years to find solutions to various physical, neurological and mental problems through dentistry. They have developed the Splint Orthodontic Myofunctional Appliance (SOMA) which helps alleviate problems such as: TMJ, migraine headaches, neck and back pain, crooked teeth, sleep apnea, mouth breathing, reduction of sympathetic nervous system overactivity, startle reflexes and others. The SOMA appears to be the one appliance that seems to correct more structural abnormalities than any other, and seems to improve or alleviate many other physical, neurological and mental problems!
In the development of the SOMA, many factors had to be taken Into consideration, especially problems found with the appliance itself. Also, Drs. Diamond and Da Cruz wanted to make sure that the "Life Energy" of the patient would be raised by wearing it. One problem with a standard appliance is that it can lock the maxilla along with the teeth. If the cranial sutures are jammed, they inhibit the movement of the skull bones and the Cranial Respiratory Impulse (CRI). The CRI is the continuous pulsation in the cranium whose strength is essential for optimum health. Another problem is that many standard appliances use metal across the midline which can be a source of stress. The SOMA has been designed to counteract both of these problems. It fits onto the upper teeth in such a way as not to inhibit the CRI and the circular metal form does not stress the wearer. It gently expands the bony structure of the upper palate without pain. This aids orthodontic correction with great efficiency as its design avoids the fight-back of facial muscles produced by regular appliances and it helps lessen temporomandibular dysfunction by decompressing the TM joints, thus encouraging muscle relaxation.
